Academic Appointments

Before you explore visa options for your prospective international hire, it's important to understand this policy: Cornell only sponsors visas for foreign nationals with academic appointments.

This means the individual must hold a temporary appointment to pursue scholarly activities at Cornell like research or teaching. Common academic appointments include professors, postdoctoral fellows, visiting scholars, instructors, research interns, and librarians. Cornell's academic appointment policy may be waived in rare special cases.

Many international citizens work at Cornell in a variety of roles. Foreign nationals can hold nonacademic staff positions at the university if they have independently gained work authorization through U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) or if they have an external visa sponsor. 

Academic Job Titles

Here is the full list of job titles for which Cornell will act as the immigration sponsor. Academic titles may not be used for appointments in administrative or other nonacademic units. 

Note that these authorized academic titles are primary titles. Secondary (administrative) titles such as dean, director, and provost are not included.

Only one modifier may be used with a title:
