Guidance: F-1 CPT Eligibility Advisory
The Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) sent two messages to school officials in August to clarify existing regulations on eligibility for F-1 Curricular Practical Training (CPT). These messages significantly narrow the past interpretation of CPT eligibility criteria.
Going forward, CPT will only be approved for internships and other employment that are:
- embedded in the curriculum,
- required of all students for degree completion, and
- supported by a formal agreement with the employer.
The International Services team has reviewed pending CPT applications, and our advisors have contacted all affected students. If you are part of this group, please also reach out to your academic advisor or your college’s student services office to walk through options available to you.
Colleges, schools, and departments across Cornell are identifying new opportunities to support internships and work opportunities for international students. We plan to work with academic programs wishing to add a required experiential learning opportunity to their degree programs.
Please don’t hesitate to reach out to us if you have questions about your current or planned application for CPT.
