Guidance: Scheduling Pause for Visa Appointments

May 28, 2025

According to May 27 reports, the Department of State is ordering U.S. embassies and consulates to temporarily pause scheduling new visa interviews for student and exchange visitor applicants (F, J, and M visas).

International Services is monitoring this emerging situation closely. We are also tracking the possible expansion of social media screening for F-1 and J-1 visa applicants. We will update this alert when more information becomes available.

Our incoming international students, faculty, and staff are highly valued members of the Cornell community. We are committed to supporting our international and immigrant community affected by changes in the federal landscape.

If you have a visa appointment scheduled: Please check with your consulate to confirm that no changes have been made to your appointment. According to recent reports, scheduled interviews can proceed.

If you have an I-20/DS-2019 but no scheduled appointment: Please follow the instructions on the nearest consulate’s website to schedule an appointment as soon as one becomes available. According to recent reports, students and scholars will not be able to schedule a visa appointment until new vetting procedures are in place.
